PART A: Web 2.0 Education

The online world has changed significantly from when we were in school. Web 2.0 tools allow everybody who has online access to collaborate. This is the second generation of the internet, and it has its own place in the educational world. Please checkout my online book I created with Papyrus for three tools I believe would work great implemented into the classroom. Click HERE for a link! Welcome to the 21st century, as educators it is our responsibilty to stay updated on tech and work with it in our blended learning environments.

PART B: Evaluating Web 2.0 Tools

With the web being such an important factor in everyday life there are thousands of different resources available to us teachers. It is crucial to select the tool that provides the most benefits and opportunities for all learners. In my opinion the list below outlines 5 key steps to question when deciding on which Web 2.0 tool to implement in the classroom. We do not want to make a mistake, and waste time when it comes to our students learning, thus it is vital to thinking logically when interpreting online applications for education.

1. It is significant to realize how enjoyable an activity is. If children are engaged in the process they will learn a lot more. Of course, the content still must be in regards to learning but several web 2.0 tools have a game based pedagogy to foster creativity and knowledge development.

2. Realize the cognitive developments occurring in children’s minds. Do the students need to be remembering, creating, applying or analyzing? What mental processes are they undergoing when interacting with this tool? Critical thinking is important.

3. How easy is it do understand the tool? It must be fairly easy, as the importance should lie on the content and the learning, rather than figuring out how to use the tool.

4. How does the tool apply to the curriculum? It must apply somehow to the curriculum, and be flexible to work with content generally or in several subject areas.

5. In the end is there opportunity to assess learning? There must be something to show for what has been learnt. A final product for evaluation is needed.
